Connecting to Career Readiness Competencies - Final Project

As my time with COMM 368 comes to a close, several of my experiences with being Assistant editor have helped me develop and apply core competencies from N.A.C.E. Firstly, critical thinking has played a key role in my editing. I have had to solve several problems with the interview footage, including reframing to the desired aspect ratio, trimming dialogue, and refining the audio via equalizers and compression. Add in time constraints, and I feel that my critical thinking skills have been sharped particularly as I have deadlines fast approaching me.

Secondly, professionalism has been an integral aspect of my internship. I have been present and prepared for each of our weekly progress meetings. This has required me to prepare my notes from editing along with any questions I have for my collaborators that will help facilitate the completion of the project. This has helped me to stay on task and push forward with my goals and expectations every week. As such, I feel very motivated by this trait and am dedicated to doing a good job.

Thirdly, Technology has been a vital aspect of my internship, given all my editing has taken place on a desktop computer via NLE Davinci Resolve Studio. I am primarily trained with the Adobe Suite of video editors, but my main editor uses Davinci, and thus I had to adapt. This has allowed me to not only achieve my deadlines but has granted me the ability to communicate with other Editors regardless of which system they use.

Overall, all three of these competencies have not only demonstrated my ability to learn and grow but have also enhanced my skill set for future use. Ultimately, the next step in my filmmaking career that I want to take is the pursuit of an MFA in directing. I feel that Critical Think, Professionalism, and Technology will all have vital roles in my pursuit of that future. From there, I simply want to keep making movies. I look forward to the second part of my internship in the Spring, and the new set of experiences and skills that I will gain. Below is my latest clip from the edit, and with that I say so long folks!
